1855 Kellogg $50 Commemorative Restrike S.S. Central America Shipwreck PCGS Gem proof gold.

We recently bought 2 of these Kellogg $50 Restrikes from a collection out of Florida that’s been off the market for 20 years. These are fresh.

Under the authorization and sanction of the California Historical Society, a limited number of commemorative gold coins were struck with gold from the rare Kellogg & Humbert gold ingots recovered from the wreck of the SS Central America, the "Ship of Gold." Incredibly, these coins were struck with working dies transferred from John Grover Kellogg's original 1855 dies, and the gold used from 69 actual California gold rush monetary ingots recovered from this very popular shipwreck.

The S.S. Central America was a three-masted steamer ship that was often used to transport gold from the California Gold Rush to the eastern seaboard of the United States. It is estimated that during its lifetime, the S.S. Central America transported almost one-third of all the gold output from the California Gold Rush. Now, 1855 Kellogg $50 Gold Commemorative SS Central America PCGS Gem Proof Coins are available to purchase.

In 1857, as the S.S. Central America was transporting 578 passengers from its final port of call in Havana, Cuba to New York City it ran into a hurricane off the coast of the Carolinas. Modern scientists have adjudged the hurricane to be a Category 2 storm and the result was the sinking of the S.S. Central America.

When the ship went down it took with it 425 of the passengers of some 14,000 kilograms of gold from the California Gold Rush. Most of that gold was in the form of 1857 $20 Gold Double Eagles produced by the United States Mint. Some 5,200 of those coins sunk with the ship and in 1988 the ship was discovered and its gold eventually recovered.

On the obverse of these 1855 Kellogg $50 Gold Commemorative S.S. Central America Coins is the Christian Gobrecht design of Liberty. This image featured on the $20 Gold Double Eagle coins in circulation in the United States when the S.S. Central America sank. It includes 13 stars above her head and a commemorative date mark of “1855.”

The reverse face of the 1855 Kellogg Gold Commemorative S.S. Central America includes the heraldic eagle of the United States. This depiction of the national seal is also the same as was in use in 1857 on American coins when the S.S. Central America sank. Engravings on this face include “Fifty Dolls” and “San Francisco, California.”

These 1855 Kellogg $50 Gold Commemorative S.S. Central America Coins are available to purchase today inside the protective plastic slabs of the PCGS. Gem Proof coins have grades between 65 and 67 on the Sheldon numeric scale, but are not labeled by a numeric grade. It’s more of a general reference to the overall condition.
