In 2014, a second salvage of the SS Central America site was conducted and the fruits of that work have yielded more than $40 million in new treasure. The Ship of Gold is undoubtedly one of the biggest stories in numismatics for the year 2018. It’s estimated that 3,100 gold coins, 45 gold bars, and thousands of mint state silver coins from a private safe within the SS Central America were recovered this time.
This Philadelphia Mint Type 2 1852-P $20 Liberty PCGS AU53 was one of ONLY 22 recovered for the date in all grades. Non San Francisco Mint shipwreck gold from the SS Central America represents another exciting way to own US history. They are much rarer and present day pricing will seem arbitrary in years to come when you can’t find one and possibly more expensive.
