1856-S $20 Liberty PCGS AU50 CAC 17J Split Serif variety SSCA #5870. This is an attractive, orange-gold example $20 Double Eagle from the SS Central America Shipwreck. Known as the Ship of Gold, this 280-foot side wheel steamer operated between Central America and the eastern coast of the United States during the 1850’s. The ship sank in a hurricane in September 1857 along with 30,000 pounds of gold, contributing to the Panic of 1857.

Each SS Central America specimen has been certified by PCGS in a special gold foil label and comes with a leather display book. Until the discovery of the SS Central America, Double Eagles from the 1850’s were virtually unavailable, or extremely pricey. It has been estimated that the SS Central America carried about $150 Million worth of gold or 1/3 of all the gold mined in California that year. Featured in the best selling book, “America’s Lost Treasure”.

Only 1108 of these 1856-S $20 Double Eagles were recovered.

This coin will come with the original box and certificate of authenticity. It has been also certified and recognized by CAC as above average for the grade with outstanding eye appeal.
