The Civil War production in 1862 begins with a long run of low mintage Philadelphia issues. Only 10,960 coins were produced during the second year of the Civil War. All available Gold that was available were sent overseas to pay for supplies bought from European allies. Many gold coins were taken out of circulation and hoarded by civilians because the lacked faith in the paper money that was issued.

Our specimen is sharply struck and has a nice original orange gold color throughout. We bought this cheap and looking to pass on the savings to our customers.
