Sorry, currently out of stock
1882 $3 Indian Gold Three Dollar PCGS MS62 PL (Proof Like) Stunning Example PQ+ PCGS has only certified 3 examples Proof Like (PL).
Fresh to the market, this incredible specimen just came back from certification at PCGS. PCGS has only graded (3) Proof Like examples of this date including this one.
During the 1880’s the Philadelphia Mint produced some beautiful and rare $3 Indian Princesses. The mintages were generally low, and one result was that the dies often kept their die polish for much of the production run. The mintage from 1882 is only 1,500 so not all of the Mint State coins were created equal. One result of this was that it became difficult for many people to tell the difference between a Proof and a Proof-Like in some cases. They were struck so well.
In many cases this is a rare quality since the dies were given no special Mint preparations like PROOF only dies.
Frame what I’m trying to say this way. They struck only 1,500 coins and to date NGC and PCGS have only graded a very small fraction of Proof Like (PL) 1882 $3 Indians in all grades. An incredible rarity that is a overlooked sleeper in today’s market.
By comparison the incredibly low proof production of this issue is only 76 coins with 50-60 thought to survive. Over 100 years later, the 1882 gold Three Dollar proof is rare in all grades. They are generally worth 2-3 times as much as the Proof Like examples. If you can find a very rare proof.
Proof Like coins represent a great way to own a beautiful, flashy rarity at a fraction of the cost of owning a proof coin.
