1911-P $20 Saint Gaudens Gold Double Eagle NGC MS64+ Flashy Orange Gold Color Amazing Better Date PQ++
This coin is from a fresh group a Gold $20’s we recently had certified at NGC This better date is really tough to find in MS64+ or higher condition. Only 197,200 were minted, many were melted down and never circulated. This is a popular and very overlooked date from the Philadelphia Mint.
Created by master sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the 1911-P $20 Gold Saint Gaudens is the descendant of the $20 Liberty Double Eagle which first entered circulation in 1850. The denomination was created as a means of exhausting an overage in gold supply due to the 1849 California Gold Rush. They were never intended for general use in commerce as the amount easily equated to a month's wage during the time of issue - making them impractical to carry as a coin. Instead, they were struck to monetize the surplus of gold and to be used exclusively in business transactions, largely between banks.
