If you are a collector nobody else in the world owns a cob or a collection of cobs exactly like yours. They were all hand struck individually and unique to all others.
The full story of the failed gold mint at Cuzco (1698-99) hides in the archives of Spain and Peru. We know some of it. Cuzco authorities got authorization in 1697 to build the mint. Used dies were shipped from Lima in May of 1698 for production. By August, Cuzco only produced Gold Cobs in the denomination of 1 Escudos and 2 Escudos. The Cuzco mint was shut down later that year after continuous serous rioting surrounding the security of the mint. Only the small amount of gold on hand was used to strike coins hastily. The mint was closed and the building sold off soon thereafter.
Prior to 1964 only one 1698 C M Peru 2 Escudos was known to exist and it was under extreme scrutiny about being legitimate. With the recovery of the 1715 Fleet, the small quantity of 1698 C M Peru 2E validated it as a one year type that was struck in Cuzco, Peru.
