On October 25, 1865, only months after the Civil War ended, the S.S. Republic encountered a powerful hurricane while traveling from New York toward New Orleans. The steamship sank off the Georgia coast, carrying a valuable cargo of gold and silver coins to the Atlantic floor.

There the treasure remained for approximately 138 years, until the wreck was discovered in 2003 and its remarkable numismatic cargo recovered.
