336-323BC Alexander the Great Gold Stater NGC MS Gen. Antigonos I Posthumous
ALEXANDER’S LEGACY IN GOLD — STRUCK UNDER HIS GENERAL ANTIGONOS
Alexander the Great Gold Stater | NGC Mint State | Strike 5/5
Magnesia on the Meander • circa 319–305 BC • 8.57 grams
Alexander’s empire fractured after his death in 323 BC, but his name continued to command extraordinary power. This impressive early posthumous gold stater was struck in his name under Antigonos I Monophthalmos—“the One-Eyed”—a veteran commander who served Alexander and was entrusted with governing Phrygia. Antigonos subsequently became one of the most formidable contenders in the struggle for Alexander’s empire.
An important distinction: Antigonos did not accompany Alexander through all his later campaigns into Persia and India. In 333 BC, Alexander appointed him satrap—provincial governor—of Greater Phrygia, in present-day Turkey. His contribution became holding and defending conquered territory while Alexander pushed farther east.
Preserved in NGC Mint State, this example combines a maximum 5/5 strike rating with striking visual presence. Athena’s helmeted portrait fills the obverse, its serpent ornament and flowing hair sharply rendered. The reverse features an exceptionally engaging Nike, goddess of victory, with beautifully defined wings and drapery, holding a wreath beside Alexander’s name.
The broad, rounded gold flan presents these celebrated designs beautifully. Minor marks and a slight obverse die shift are consistent with the coin’s 3/5 surface rating, while its strong detail gives it considerable appeal.
