Alexander the Great was an ancient Macedonian ruler and one of history’s greatest military generals who—as King of Macedonia and Persia—established the largest empire the ancient world had ever seen. Alexander the Great would be described by historians as many things: charismatic and ruthless, brilliant tactician and power hungry, diplomatic and bloodthirsty.

In return Alexander had such loyalty in his men they’d follow him anywhere and, if necessary, sacrifice themselves in the process for the empire. Alexander the Great died in June 323 B.C. at age 32. Some historians say Alexander died of malaria or other natural causes; others believe he was poisoned. There would be no line of succession in place. But he is thought to have given his signet ring to one of his closet generals to rule until his unborn son Alexander IV was ready.
