This is classic Spanish Colonial gold from the reign of King Ferdinand VI (1746–1759), struck at the historic Santa Fe de Bogotá Mint. The 4 Escudos of this type was struck in .917 fine gold at a standard weight of approximately 13.53 grams.
A Rare Survivor of Spanish Colonial Colombia
The 4 Escudos denomination is considerably more elusive than the iconic 8 Escudos, particularly when encountered in problem-free, certified About Uncirculated condition.
This piece is especially desirable because its date is off the flan, leading NGC to attribute it to the (1747–1756) FS period rather than a specific year. That is entirely characteristic of hand-hammered Spanish Colonial cob coinage, where irregular planchets and incomplete legends make every surviving specimen unique.
The coin features the unmistakable imagery of the period:
Obverse: Crowned Spanish royal arms, representing the authority of the Spanish Crown over its New World territories.
Reverse: Bold Jerusalem-style cross surrounded by the characteristic devices of Spanish Colonial gold coinage.

This coin has been certified NGC AU53, an impressive state of preservation for an 18th-century hand-struck Colombian gold issue.
The certified population for this type is remarkably thin. These coins simply do not appear in the numbers encountered for many other Spanish Colonial gold issues. As additional evidence of the type’s rarity, the current PCGS Population Report records only one example certified for the entire (1747–56) S 4 Escudos type. NGC has graded less than 10 total coins in all grades.
NGC’s own historical records also document the famous Louis E. Eliasberg Sr. Collection example of the Colombian 4 Escudos—a 1755 NR S—at exactly NGC AU53, underscoring how significant an AU-level survivor can be within this challenging series.
