As Emperor of Rome from 161-180, Marcus Aurelius kept the empire safe from the Parthians and Germans, but is best known for his intellectual pursuits. It was the historian Edward Gibbon who described the 5 Good emperors. The other emperors were Nerva, Trajan, Hadrian, Antonius Pius and Marcus Aurelius.
